United Nations: Peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet

Can all the countries of the world come together on a single platform and find solutions to global problems? To answer this question, the United Nations (UN), a global intergovernmental organization, established in 1945, has been at the forefront.

The United Nations was founded(Charter entered into force) on October 24, 1945 by signing the UN Charter on June 26, 1945. Starting with 51 countries, today it has 193 member states and 2 observer states. Its headquarters is in New York, USA, while other offices are located in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, and The Hague.

The main bodies of the United Nations are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat. All were established in 1945 when the United Nations was founded.

Maintaining world peace and security, fostering friendly relations, and achieving international cooperation are the main goals of this organization. China, France, Russia, the UK, and the USA are the five permanent member countries.

The current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres (Portugal), assumed office on January 1, 2017. Re-elected in 2021 for a second term, he has focused on leading the world’s recovery after the COVID pandemic. The General Assembly appoints the Secretary-General, based on the recommendation of the Security Council, for a 5 year, renewable term.

Despite playing a prominent role in establishing peace, the UN continues to face criticism over bias and corruption. Nevertheless, it stands as a global platform for democracy among nations.
