UNICEF : For Every Child

What does it take to protect the world’s children in times of crisis and peace? Since its establishment on December 26, 1946, headquartered in New York, USA, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has been answering this question with action. Its network of 150 country offices and 7 regional hubs ensures on-the-ground support before, during, and after emergencies.

Originally launched as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to aid the children and mothers in countries affected by World War II, UNICEF became a permanent United Nations(UN) agency in 1953. Today, it operates in over 190 countries and territories, reaching the most disadvantaged children with healthcare, nutrition, education, and protection.

The world’s largest vaccine provider, UNICEF, delivers life-saving immunizations and operates the biggest humanitarian warehouse (in Copenhagen, Denmark), supplying over $3 billion worth of aid annually. Its work spans diverse areas such as child protection, education, gender equality, clean water, sanitation, and fighting the effects of climate change.

The current Executive Director of UNICEF is Catherine M. Russell (American), appointed by the UN Secretary General on February 1, 2022. UNICEF is overseen by a 36-member executive board, which sets policies, approves programs, and monitors administrative and financial plans. The board is composed of government representatives, elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council for terms of about three years.

For nearly eight decades, UNICEF has remained one of the most trusted global humanitarian organizations, striving to ensure every child survives, thrives, and fulfills their potential.
