Externally, the nose is the prominent center of the face. Internally, it has two nostrils separated by a wall called the septum. The nasal cavity is lined with mucous membranes and tiny hairs called cilia that trap dust and germs. The sinuses are small air spaces around the nose that make your voice sound nice and help your head feel lighter.

The nose is vital for breathing, filtering air, detecting smells, and even supports taste. Air passes through the nostrils, is warmed and humidified, and is cleaned by mucus and cilia before reaching the lungs. The olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity detect thousands of smells, sending signals to the brain.

Sometimes, the nose can get sick. Sinusitis, nasal polyps, deviated septum, allergies, and colds are common nose issues. According to global health reports, about 3 out of 10 adults suffer chronic sinus problems at some point in life.

Keeping the nose healthy involves staying hydrated, cleaning nostrils gently, avoiding smoke, and using saline sprays if necessary. A balanced diet helps maintain mucous membrane health.
