Functioning under the Ministry of Defence, this organisation develops modern weapon systems and equipment tailored to the needs of the tri-services of India.
Through indigenous research, development, and production, DRDO has achieved remarkable successes. The Agni and Prithvi series of missiles, light combat aircraft Tejas, multi-barrel rocket launcher Pinaka, and air defence system Akash are projects that showcase DRDO’s brilliance to the world.
In addition, successful development of strategic platforms like radars and electronic warfare systems has empowered the Indian Armed Forces with new capabilities. These achievements have provided the nation with effective deterrence and established critical superiority in defence.
DRDO was established in 1958. Its headquarters is at DRDO Bhavan, New Delhi. It was formed by merging three organisations namely, the Army’s Technical Development Establishments (TDEs), the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP), and the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). At that time, it was a small organisation operating with only 10 establishments/laboratories.
Over time, DRDO expanded across multiple scientific disciplines, achieving significant research milestones, successes, and prestige. Today, DRDO has a vast network of around 41 main laboratories and 5 DRDO Young Scientist Laboratories (DYSLs).
These labs are engaged in developing defence technologies across aeronautics, electronics, combat vehicles, weapons, missiles, advanced computing, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training, information systems, agriculture, and many other fields.
Currently, Rajnath Singh is serving as India’s Defence Minister. Dr. Samir V. Kamat serves as Secretary DDR&D(Directorate of Defense, Research, & Development) and Chairman of DRDO(Defence Research and Development Organisation).
DRDO’s tagline/motto is “Balasya Mulam Vigyanam”, a Sanskrit phrase meaning “Source of strength is science.” Starting as a small organisation, DRDO has now grown into a major institution safeguarding the nation’s future.
