As per the IMF World Economic Outlook data released in April 2025, India has achieved a major milestone by becoming the world’s 4th largest economy, with its GDP crossing $4 trillion on par with Japan. However, the challenge remains in improving per capita income, which is $2,934 (₹2.5 lakh) compared to Japan’s $33,955.
In 2024-25, India’s GDP grew by 6.4%, maintaining its position as the fastest-growing major economy. For 2025-26, the growth rate is estimated between 6.3 & 6.8%.
Looking at the sector-wise GDP contribution in 2024-25, agriculture accounts for 17.94%, industry 27.13%, and the services sector 54.93%. Employment is mainly in agriculture, while income comes largely from the services sector.
In the UN Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2025, India ranks 99th out of 193 countries with an index score of 67.0, marking the first time it has entered the top 100 since the SDGs were adopted in 2015.
India jumps 79 positions from 142nd (2014) to 63rd rank (2019) in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Ranking 2020.
India ranks 130th out of 193 countries in the 2025 Human Development Report, with its HDI rising from 0.676 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023, remaining in the medium human development category and approaching the high human development category.
Moreover, India aims to become a $5 trillion economy by 2027, and projections suggest it will emerge as the world’s third-largest economy by 2030 with a GDP of $7.3 trillion, surpassing Germany.
With robust reforms, a tech-driven youth, strong services sector, and massive digital infrastructure, India is shaping up to be an economic superpower. From rural farming to digital banking, from MSMEs to global tech giants — everyone has a role in this growth story!
