On October 1, 1953, with the merger of the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, the journey began as the “Andhra State” with 11 districts. Back then, the capital was Kurnool.

Just three years later, on November 1, 1956, Telangana was merged, and Andhra Pradesh was born with 20 districts. With Hyderabad as the capital, it made history as the first linguistically formed state in the country.

Time passed. In 2014, the state was bifurcated and Telangana was separated. With the remaining Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions consisting of 13 districts, the state was reconstituted on June 2, 2014, under the same name “Andhra Pradesh.” The capital was Amaravati.

The story didn’t end there. In 2022, another major change took place on the state map. As part of district reorganization, on April 4, 2022, 13 new districts were formed. With a total of 26 districts now, Andhra Pradesh expanded further. Coastal Andhra has 18 districts, while Rayalaseema has 8 districts.

Geographically, the state stretches between 12°41′ to 22° North Latitudes, and 77° to 84°40′ East Longitudes. A land that blends sea, mountains, and rivers together.

Every stage in the history of Andhra Pradesh marks a significant turning point. Emerging as a separate state, pioneering the linguistic movement, and, after reorganization, laying new foundations; the state continues its journey.

Why so many changes? The aspirations of the people, administrative needs, and political decisions – all three together redrew the map. But what are the real stories behind these changes? To know that, we need to dig deeper!
